Hollywood Beach Mobi-Mat®, Florida

The City of Hollywood Beach is among the first in the State of Florida to obtain authorization from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for installation of four permanent American with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible beach access ways utilizing the Mobi-Mat® RecPath material.

Coastal System worked with the DEP on behalf of the City of Hollywood Beach Community Redevelopment Agency to secure the Coastal Construction Control Line permit for installation of the four ADA compliant Mobi- Mat® Rec Paths to be placed within the City's Central Business District at: Connecticut Street, Johnson Street, New York Street and Tyler Street. The mats were authorized with a dimension of 6 feet in the shore-parallel direction by approximately 82 feet in the shore-normal direction.

The Mobi-Mat® RecPath material, was selected because it is easy to install, quick to remove from the beach prior to a storm event, lightweight, offers reliable traction, and is cost effective.

Upon completion of the project, the accessways were used frequently by wheelchair and disabled visitors seeking comfortable beach access. A variety of federal and local ADA organization inspected the mats, including the U.S. Access Board and the Center for Independent Living in Broward. Representatives of both organizations found the mats to be safe and accessible.
