The Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale, formerly the St. Regis Hotel and Residences (Project), is Fort Lauderdale's most recently completed luxury beachfront resort. Located across from the beach on A1A, the development provides condominium units, time share units, hotel guestrooms, a ballroom, meeting rooms and a pool deck overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, the hotel has a 129.5-foot public pedestrian bridge over A1A that leads to the beach with elevators at each end.
Coastal Systems provided civil engineering and coastal/environmental permitting services for the Project. Coastal Systems secured coastal construction control line (CCCL) permits from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). As part of the DEP CCCL permitting process, Coastal Systems provided coastal engineering services to model the anticipated impacts of a 100-year storm event on the structures. This analysis provided the anticipated wave crest height, as well as the eroded profile, associated with a major hurricane event.
As part of the CCCL permitting process, Coastal Systems also obtained Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approval for both the development and the pedestrian bridge to ensure protection of endangered marine turtles and their habitat.
The development is uniquely situated facing the beach and with a bridge landing at the landward edge of the beach. This created special lighting considerations pertaining to type of fixture, position, and signage. The pedestrian bridge also presented unique lighting considerations, as adequate lighting for pedestrian and vehicular safety had to be balanced with criteria for keeping light sources and cumulative lighting glow from being visible from marine turtle nesting habitat.
