Conceptual designs of marina improvements, shore protection, beaches and jetties were provided by Coastal Systems International, Inc. for the proposed development at Powell Point on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Hydrographic surveys of the existing beaches, marinas and jetties were conducted, and the existing marina structures, including the piers and bulkheads, were assessed by engineer-divers.
Concepts were prepared for beach improvements along the proposed development consisting of offshore detached breakwater configurations with protective beaches. The breakwaters were aligned for the expected wave climate. The marina entrance jetties were designed for optimum wave protection and use of concrete armor units.
Several marina concepts were developed for optimum slip mixes. The marina concepts were sized for 100-135 slips to accommodate vessels ranging from 40' to 140' in length. Larger slips were incorporated to provide for megayachts. A conceptual design report was prepared to document conceptual alternatives and to provide engineering cost estimates for construction. Photographs and a summary of existing conditions were included along with tables, color figures and recommendations.
Coastal Systems prepared construction documents for Phase I of the marine works. These plans include construction of 40 new slips from timber docks concurrent with the initial upland development at Powell Pointe. Other elements include 1,800 feet of bulkhead, entrance channel jetties, maintenance dredging and marina utilities.
