Emerald Bay, Bahamas

Coastal Systems International, Inc. conducted a detailed analysis on the long period wave oscillations within the Emerald Bay Marina. The Emerald Bay Marina is located in the island of Great Exuma, Bahamas and is a 45-acre deepwater facility that is equipped to accommodate vessels up to 200 feet. Since the marina opened, seiching has been reported. Seiching is the phenomenon of long period wave oscillations within a marina basin, which can result in frequent broken mooring lines and an overall inconvenience for boaters.

Coastal Systems was hired to conduct an analysis of the existing marina using the Danish Hydraulic Institute's (DHI) numerical wave modeling software. In order to determine the governing factors of seiching and the location of seiching "hot spots", comprehensive post-processing of the modeling results was conducted. This included statistical analysis, low and high pass filtering, and wave spectra analysis. Based on the results, recommendations were provided on the marina configuration to minimize long period wave oscillations and to improve mooring conditions.
