Key Biscayne Beach Management, Florida
Coastal Systems has worked with the Village of Key Biscayne for over 10 years on various beach management initiatives, including a major renourishment project that was completed in 2002. In 2008, Coastal Systems managed construction of a dune rehabilitation truck haul that we designed and permitted in 2007 to address severe erosion caused by Hurricane Wilma and subsequent storm activity. The 2008 dune rehabilitation project rebuilt the high dry beach as well as the dune feature.
In addition, Coastal Systems is working with the Village through the development and adoption of a Marine Turtle Protection Ordinance, based on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Model Lighting Ordinance (Ch. 62B-55, F.A.C.) and other turtle protection experience. In an effort to prepare a Marine Turtle Protection Ordinance that appropriately meets the needs to of the Village, Coastal Systems evaluated marine turtle nesting data for the island, conducted discussions with FWC staff and the local marine turtle permit holder, reviewed draft ordinance language for other oceanfront municipalities within South Florida, and met with Village staff and stakeholders to identify their unique requirements and goals.
Coastal Systems is also currently teamed with CSA International, Inc. to complete seagrass mitigation within Biscayne Bay for impacts caused by the 2002 renourishment project. This mitigation is particularly challenging because it is within the State-designated Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Coastal Systems is negotiating final permit approvals for the mitigation design, while CSA conducts the seagrass restoration activities.
